“Planned Parenthood has been my go-to place since college,” she says. “When I got to my appointment I laid out my situation for the social worker. She was amazing. One of things I remember most vividly is her telling me that I couldn’t make a wrong decision. It was the first time anyone had said this to me. She was telling me that either way—having a baby or having an abortion—was okay. She didn’t tell me what I should or shouldn’t do, but instead helped me think about the issues. As I talked I understood that my problem was not the pregnancy but the relationship I was in. By listening and not judging me the counselor helped me clarify what I had to do: Abort the father, keep the baby.”
Almash’s speech is salted with adjectives: Great, helpful, compassionate. That’s why, she continues, she gets so riled up when conservative politicians condemn Planned Parenthood and other reproductive health providers. “I want these legislators to know that my three-year-old is here, not despite, but because of, Planned Parenthood.”
Indeed, comprehensive options counseling—to help women determine whether abortion, adoption, or childbearing is right for them—is deeply woven into the care offered at women’s health facilities throughout the United States.
” —Excerpt from “STOKING FIRE: Women’s Health Facilities Are Crucial To All Pregnancy-Related Decisions” (via prolongedeyecontact)“Like I’ve said before, this isn’t about tearing apart Apple or saying people should not buy iPhone 4S’s - it’s about showing how holes in our knowledge are created and perpetuated UNTIL someone points out that they exist. A hole in the programmers’ knowledge/experience has led to a hole in Siri’s.”
So here’s my question…why the fuck not? Just to use a recent tumblrized example, there was a broad outrage over Sketchers’ (shitty, gross) sale of body-snarktastic shoes to young girls and calls for a boycott, and that was over body image. Not that the Sketchers bullshit wasn’t TOTALLY worth calling out and WORTH getting upset about, but that was also a matter of transmitting bad messages to kids, not KEEPING PEOPLE FROM NEEDED MEDICAL CARE. Even if you leave abortion completely out of it, Siri is programmed to play “no comprendo” when confronted with a request for birth control and what was that other thing…OH RIGHT, EMERGENCY CARE FOLLOWING FUCKING RAPE. Why does Apple get off the hook? Why are we taking this “oh I’m sure it’s just a glitch, let’s have Apple fix it” approach when this is fucking reprehensible? The women-in-programming concern is totally valid and I’m sure that with more women in programming and tech would give a richer, more nuanced understanding of the needs of women in the world, but FUCK THAT. IT IS 20-FUCKING-11. It’s not like women’s bodies are still total mysteries and no one speaks of birth control aloud…this is a matter of public discourse. Fuck Apple for not doing this right. Code doesn’t spontaneously generate, this is something that some programmer(s) thought about and went “well, shit, we can’t have them ladyfolk getting any scary autonomy over their reproductive health.” No. Fuck Apple, they deserve a boycott and more. This is ridiculous.
As the person who started that Skechers campaign, I have to say that I agree with this poster. I think it’s really absurd for a major company to take what appears to be a pretty definitive stance on this. Now, it’s a little more subversive than the Skechers ads, but I think that Apple seriously needs to answer for this. Apple has done a lot of cool shit, and people are really into Apple, I get it. But this is a pretty inexcusable problem that needs to be remedied ASAP.
BLESS THE PERSON WHO REALIZED THIS
